BAYWOOD - A Collection of Handsome, Stately Homes on Manicured Lots
In 1853 a Virginian banker named John Parrott married Abby Eastman Meaher, thus beginning one of the great familial lines of San Mateo’s history. They acquired a choice piece of land, and named it Baywood. Although they maintained a prestigious residence on Rincon Hill in San Francisco, Mrs. Parrott and their eight children spent most of their time at the Baywood home at 120 West Third Avenue.
In 1927, the Baywood subdivision map was filed. Now the nearly 400 handsome homes grace coveted Baywood. Open and manicured, this neighborhood features homes with architectural styles of Tudor and Colonial, top-notch schools and a cosmopolitan flair. Buyers looking for great weather, a quiet well-tended, upscale and fashionable neighborhood and a short commute end up here. Just steps away, the impressive San Mateo Library, designed by the noted architectural firm Esherick, Homsey, Dodge & Davis (Monterey Bay Aquarium), is state-of-the-art and tech-smart, and the 16 acre Central Park features the cherish Japanese Tea Garden with its koi pond, crossed with wooded bridges, where the koi are feed every day at 11 a.m. and at 3 p.m. Top Zagat restaurants of Viognier and 231 Ellsworth, a 12-screen movie house, family dining at Jeffrey’s Hamburgers and Amici’s Pizzas are all within walking distance. And completing the scene is Dreager’s, a culinary delight with the wine tasting of international wines and hands-on cooking classes.
