SAN MATEO PARK  -  A Park with Magical Ambiance and Winding Streets

The Clark family worked this land as a dairy farm and cattle ranch for decades. The San Francisco elite had other ideas for this lovely plot of land.  In 1896, John McLaren, respected landscape architect and designer of Golden Gate Park, along with noted architect George Howard Jr., started the development of San Mateo Park. Winding streets were laid out to conform to the gentle rolling terrain and 69 street islands/circles were formed, all to be planted with unique trees. McLaren chose his islands to be graced with classic Californian trees of oak and redwood, Eastern maples and poplars, and exotic specimen trees from around the world such as cork oak and olive trees.

Today, all that live and visit San Mateo Park agree that these two men have created a magical neighborhood. McLaren’s trees are tall and mature now, and grace the handsome period houses that have been built over the years. Here, Queen Ann architecture sits beside Bernard Maybeck and Julia Morgan masterpieces. French Normandies, Mediterraneans and English Tudors complete the landscape.   San Mateo Park is truly a park.
